Woman at Bus Stop Shot in Both Legs in Woodlawn Neighborhood

A woman standing at a Woodlawn neighborhood bus stop near the University of Chicago was shot in both legs Tuesday night.

The 44-year-old woman was standing at a bus stop in the 6100 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue when she was shot multiple times at 8:23 p.m., police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said.

The shooter was standing across the street from her and was described as being a black male with braids who was wearing a black sweatshirt and black pants, according to Grand Crossing District police Lt. Dale Kingsley. It was unclear whether she was the target, because witnesses on the scene gave conflicting statements.

The woman was in good condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds to both legs, the lieutenant said.

Shell casings of an unidentified caliber were recovered on the scene at 6101 S. Cottage Grove Ave., according to the lieutenant, who said no one else was hurt.

The shooting happened about a block south of the University of Chicago campus and Washington Park.

An arrest has not been made early Wednesday, the lieutenant said.

Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
